The temporary BUGA Pavillon of the Handwerkskammer Koblenz on the parking lot next to the St. Kastor church was used during the BUGA 2011 for exhibitions, workshops and other activities. The treehugger has been designed as modular wood construction in oder to both ensure an easy assembly and the conceptional and constructional coherent implementation of the complex geometry especially of the treelike pillars.
The interior is structured by the point-symmetric pentagonal modules that are three dimensonal ornaments as well as the constructional load bearing structure. The pillars rise organically and connect the floor and the roof to an continious surface. The wooden staffs are rigidly interconnected with steel angles that sit in slots and are fixed with fitted bolts. Only by consequently using digital design and production tools it was possible to realize this complex supporting structure economically and in time.
The glass facade consists of room-high laminated safety glass panels with differents prints that are mounted only on at the top and at the bottom. The vertical joints are sealed wet. and the doorframes are designed self supporting and grounded in the floor. Thus no substructure was necessary for the facade. The slightly inclined skylights are also built with laminated safety glass. The ventilation is ensured by an all round gap. For the glass construction an approval for the individual case was required.
